An Overview of the Book Democracy in America

Democracy in America, written by Alexis de Tocqueville between 1835 and 1840, is considered one of the most comprehensive and insightful books ever written about the U.S. Having seen the failed attempts at a democratic government in his native France, Tocqueville set out to study a stable and prosperous democracy in order to gain insight into how it worked. Democracy in America is the result of his studies. The book was and still remains, so popular because it deals with issues such as religion, the press, money, class structure, racism, the role of government, and the judicial system – issues that are just as relevant today as they were then. ​Many colleges in the U.S. continue to use Democracy in America in political science and history courses. There are two volumes to Democracy in America. Volume one was published in 1835 and is more optimistic of the two. It focuses mainly on the structure of government and the institutions that help maintain freedom in the United States. Volume two, published in 1840, focuses more on individuals and the effects that the democratic mentality has on the norms and thoughts that exist in society. Tocqueville’s main purpose in writing Democracy in America was to analyze the functioning of political society and the various forms of political associations, although he also had some reflections on civil society as well as the relations between political and civil society. He ultimately seeks to understand the true nature of American political life and why it was so different from Europe. Topics Covered Democracy in America covers a vast array of topics. In Volume I, Tocqueville discusses things such as: the social condition of Anglo-Americans; judicial power in the United States and its influence on political society; the United States Constitution; freedom of press; political associations; the advantages of a democratic government; the consequences of democracy; and the future of the races in the United States. In Volume II of the book, Tocqueville covers topics such as: How religion in the United States avails itself to democratic tendencies; Roman Catholicism in the United States; pantheism; equality and the perfectibility of man; science; literature; art; how democracy has modified the English language; spiritual fanaticism; education; and equality of the sexes. Features of American Democracy Tocqueville’s studies of democracy in the United States led him to the conclusion that American society is characterized by five key features: 1. Love of equality: Americans love equality even more than we love individual liberty or freedom (Volume 2, Part 2, Chapter 1). 2. Absence of tradition: Americans inhabit a landscape largely without inherited institutions and traditions (family, class, religion) that define their relations to one another (Volume 2, Part 1, Chapter 1). 3. Individualism: Because no person is intrinsically better than another, Americans begin to seek all reasons in themselves, looking not to tradition nor to the wisdom of singular individuals, but to their own opinion for guidance (Volume 2, Part 2, Chapter 2). 4. Tyranny of the majority: At the same time, Americans give great weight to, and feel great pressure from, the opinion of the majority. Precisely because they are all equal, they feel insignificant and weak in contrast to the greater number (Volume 1, Part 2, Chapter 7). 5. Importance of free association: Americans have a happy impulse to work together to improve their common life, most obviously by forming voluntary associations. This uniquely American art of association tempers their tendencies towards individualism and gives them a habit and taste for serving others (Volume 2, Part 2, Chapters 4 and 5). Predictions for America Tocqueville is often acclaimed for making a number of correct predictions in Democracy in America. First, he anticipated that the debate over the abolition of slavery could potentially tear apart the United States, which it did during the American Civil War. Second, he predicted that the United States and Russia would rise as rival superpowers, and they did after World War II. Some scholars also argue that Tocqueville, in his discussion of the rise of the industrial sector in the American economy, correctly predicted that an industrial aristocracy would rise from the ownership of labor. In the book, he warned that â€Å"friends of democracy must keep an anxious eye peeled in this direction at all times† and went on to say that a new found wealthy class may potentially dominate society. According to Tocqueville, democracy would also have some unfavorable consequences, including the tyranny of the majority over thought, a preoccupation with material goods, and isolating individuals from each other and society. The Bush Administrations oil demand and antigovernment sensibility soiled the Minerals Management Service (MMS), the agency charged with regulating offshore drilling. Vice President Dick Cheney had presided over the weakening of drilling regulations, including the exclusion of remote-shut-off switches which might have prevented the disaster. Soon, MMS was nothing but a shell of its former shell filled with corruption and political influence. The rig was drilling a 35,050 feet (10,680 m) deep exploratory well in approximately 5,100 feet (1,600 m) of water. The well is situated in the Macondo Prospect in Mississippi Canyon Bl ock 252 (MC252) of the Gulf of Mexico, whilst also maintained by Halliburton, and Transocean the rig was majority owned and operated by the British Petroleum. On April 20, 2010, high-pressure methane gas from the well expanded into the drilling riser and rose into the drilling rig, where it ignited and exploded, engulfing the platform. At the time, 126 crew members were on board: seven BP employees, 79 of Transocean and employees of various other companies. Eleven workers were presumed dead, never being found. The Deepwater Horizon sank on the morning of 22 April 2010. The efforts to contain the leak at first were unsuccessful due to miscalculations and misinterpretations of what was required. However, on September 19, 2010 the well was permanently sealed when a relief well was dug into the oil deposit and cement was poured into the oil well. The environmental impact, health consequences, economy and ultimately the death of the 11 workers were the consequent issues that arose with t he tremendous release of oil into the ocean. The first question, what is the definition of a brand? A brand is simply a name or symbol that is used to identify a product or a source of a product. A famous example is the golden arches, or the yellow M that represents McDonald’s restaurants. The yellow M is so well known a, 4 year old child can identify the McDonald’s brand on site even before knowing how to read. Terri was instructed the original Dawn only came as a blue liquid. Dawn was easily identified as a brand due to the unique blue color. Terri’s next question, what is brand equity? Brand equity was explained in relation to the Dawn liquid. Brand equity can be seen from three different perspectives. The first perspective involves finances. The financial perspective is one way to measure brand equity. The financial perspective is why Terri is willing to pay a higher price for the Dawn versus paying the cheaper price for the competing liquids. The willingness to pay the higher price provides essential information about the value of the Dawn brand. The second perspective involves brand extensions. When Dawn first entered the market, only one choice existed. Today many variations of the Dawn brand exist. Dawn has teamed up with Cascade and they offer an automatic dish washer tablet. Dawn has several extensions from the original scent such as citrus, lavender and a direct foam product. The related brand such as the Dawn Direct Foam is a brand extension. The third perspective of brand equity involves the consumer’s attitude. Terri has a strong attitude towards the Dawn product. Dawn is a strong brand which increases Terri’s positive attitude toward the Dawn brand. The attitude is built based on the experience with the product. Terri’s next set of questions concern brand positioning. Dawn has a dominant place in Terri’s mind. Positioning is the attempt of a brand to occupy the space of a consumers mind. One drop of Dawn completing a sink full of dishes is the goal it helps consumers achieve. Dawn positions itself has a unique liquid with power scrubbers. In the consumers mind they see little power scrubbers that eat and destroy the grease particles in the water and on the dishes. No other dish washing liquid claims to have tiny power-scrubbers in their liquid that fight and destroy grease. The interview with Terri is complete. Terri has a better understanding of why she feels Dawn is the only dishwashing liquid she will use. The second part of the research will identify how Dawn identifies market segments and targets? How has Dawn developed its brand equity over time? How does Dawn position itself on the market? What is dishwashing liquid? Dishwashing liquid is a detergent made of a mixture of high foam surfactants. Dishwashing liquid is also known as dish soap or dishwashing soap. To de fend my finding, I give the example of the electronic design studio which has been known to foster richer interaction amongst the learning community (students and the other faculty members included). It accomplishes this by use of its software and hardware technological interfaces that allow new forms of communication and conversation. Reflection 1 Essay Reflection 1 Essay Reflection 1 London as Art Capital JD Lee Upon arriving at the National Gallery, the main entrance hall facing directly toward the Trafalgar Square was quite modern in its design and also had small staircases to the first room of the gallery, which gave me some sense that the journey of exhibition starts right after the staircases. After the staircases, there was a central hall filled paintings on the both sides and also there were three doors leading people to three different kinds of rooms. This layout of the room with three different directions was not helping create a natural flow of people enjoying the gallery. People were coming in and going out from the all of the three direction which was causing a confusion and discomfort. The lighting for the central hall was little brighter and more golden than the natural light. It definitely had natural light coming in from the open ceiling, but yellowish light was added on to it. The arrangement of the paintings was consistent. The largest paintings were places in the ce nter of the wall and other smaller paintings were hung right next to the largest, surrounding the largest. This arrangement of the paintings looked really balanced and symmetric. After the central hall, I went to the room with a lot of British portraits. The room was covered in reddish and patterned walls. Also, from the center of the room, since the room is in circular shape, I could see the big four portraits around me.
